RACHEL FOX | CO-PRESIDENT

Where do you live?
Moncton (Lutes Mountain, specifically)

What position do you hold on the board?
Happy to help however is needed

When did you start competing in triathlon?
Oh gosh- first triathlon would’ve been when I was living in Halifax in between my undergrad and medical degrees, probably around 2000 (I’m old!). I believe it was an Olympic distance, which I did on a mountain bike.

Who is your favourite sports hero?
This is a tough one. I have so much respect for athletes who have incredible odds stacked against them but refuse to make excuses and just go out there and get the job done. The all time great example might be Terry Fox. Present day, I find Lionel Sanders’ story fascinating, even if his intensity is a little bit scary.

What is the best part about competing?
The best part about competing for me is the training and the psychological and organizational challenge of trying to control as many factors as I can in the race. That, combined with the amazing like-minded friends made through the shared suffering in training and chasing big goals make triathlon a hard sport to beat!

What is your favourite sports quote?
I’m not sure who said it, but I love the quote “Inspire by example”.

Who do you wish was watching you compete at all your events?
Love it when my whole crew is able to come out and watch a race! Seeing the kids get excited and loving the atmosphere of race day is the best..

What is your favourite song to listen to – to get you pumped for competing?
I have a few top songs on the go for hard bike intervals:
-Livin’ on a Prayer- Bon Jovi
-Lose Yourself- Eminem
-The Greatest Show- Hugh Jackman

What is your favorite Triathlon race distance?
I’ve raced everything from Sprint to full Ironman and they all have something great to offer! But my heart lies with the process and challenge of the Ironman distance.

What is your favorite race?
Locally, Sackville Tri is a fave because it’s such a well-run and fun race (plus, it’s close and starts a bit later in the morning!). Away from NB I have so many faves but I especially loved the Ironman course in Lake Placid.

How/Are you staying fit, healthy, and happy during this pandemic?
Training for an Ironman, of course! After the cancellation of Mont Tremblant and then Ironman Canada last year, I finally got to race at Ironman Arizona in November. The associated 11 months of training toward a goal along with crazy tri friends has been my saving grace.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of sport of triathlon?
Supporting the kids in all of their activities and seeing them develop a love for their own sports gives me so much joy. Hanging out with our funny doodle dog Gus and cat Emma also top the list.

What is your must-have training accessory?
I don’t think I can name just one fave training accessory – I love gear! The smart trainer for the bike has been a game changer for me. I also love the Varia radar light when riding out on the roads.
